I mean: Is Joy2 used as Master System joy1 then?

Yes Sega Master System uses JOY2 port as joy1.

Ok, I made the DB9-SD adaptor as described but I get "could not initialize SD" error.
So maybe I need a specific format for the Micro-SD? (I used an SD-MicroSD adapter for this).

So far I tried FAT16 (linux fdisk hex code 6) formatted with "mkfs.msdos -F 16", put some ROMS but got the mentioned error.

Do you have an SD or HCSD because my HCSD also not worked. And so I had to take the older miniSD ... "could not initialize SD" means he does not see the SD card.

So it's not visible at all? Should I blame my JOY-SD adapter before I get an older micro-sd? :|

Woho! I'm souch a BAD solderer! :D
So it's now difficulty level 2!

Well, I followed the new schematics and now I get: "Can't read MBR. Could not initalize FAT."
At least the card is now recognized...

I tried both a 4GB SDHC Kingston (Could not initalize FAT) and a NON-SDHC old 2GB microSD (Could not initialize SD card).
So it's VERY picky about the card model, it seems...
No mre cards around to try, and getting even older ones can be hard :(

SD cards are notoriously finicky - I've been having "fun" adding SD card support to my TG68 project over the last week or two.

How's the SD bootstrapping handled for the SMS core? Is it done via RTL, or a program running on a processor?

If anyone wants to add SHDC support I may be able to help with reference code and command sequences, etc.

I tried the SD card:

SD 2GB kingston - work
miniSD 1GB KINGMAX - work
microSD 2GB Kingston - work
microHCSD 4GB KINGSTON - not work

But the fact is that the format of SD under OSX I also did not work. I had to reformat the card system Win.

SD card controller is written in Z80 code for SMS.
But if you have an SD card controller in VHDL code, I'd like to try ...

But I don't have a single Windows machine at hand, no one at home uses it so... what does Windows that Linux fdisk & mkfs utils don't do?
Does it use LBA FAT formats? Maybe it's cluster size?
