Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows someone in the US that can or has performed the RAM upgrade. I'm interested in having this done, but am not experienced at this sort of thing. Are there any reasons not to perform this upgrade?

Also, I read about a SD/MMC upgrade that can increase the speed. I've searched for more details but haven't found a good guide. Does anyone know the steps involved? Are there any reasons not to perform this upgrade?

Thanks!

This "upgrade" is intended for Minimigs with ARM boards only. It only increases transfer speed of emulated hard disk. There is no point in making this mod on Minimigs equipped with PIC micro controller. It may cause malfunction with PIC firmwares prior to PYQ090405.

I have complete the ram mod on my minimig and I have now 2MB chip and 1.5MB normal ram: (minus 512kb kickstart).
So I'm ready for the ARM controller, I hope it will be released soon :-)
The ram mod is easy after hand-building 9 minimig's

All working fine with the new core from yaqube, men he sure now how to code the FPGA.

@Yaqube respect for all your hard work on this one !!!!!!

Here is my mod of 4MB s-ram and ARM sd-card speed-up:

Those wires is magnet wire, nonconducting if unsoldered.
Also R50 & R51 is replaced by 0 Ohm bridge.

Works 100% and the pcb is waiting for Jakub's ARM board :)

Hmm, don't think I'll be attempting this mod. I'll stick with 1.5mb, looking through whdload files there seem to be plenty of games that work with that amount.

It's quite easy to do. Don't be afraid to try it! (You know what's written on the Minimig's PCB, don't you?)

Just follow Jakub's guide (link is in the new manual). The key is to bend the leads straight out and then push them flat against the chip's body. This will add an extra 0.2mm length which makes all the difference between and easy and a difficult mod.

I missed out that step and what could have been a 10 minute job took me 30 minutes. Remember to tin the leads of the new chips before applying them to the board. Also, if possible get some Kynar wire, as it results in the neatest result.

Cheers!
Edwin

Maybe, but I gave it a try (under UAE with the relevant settings). You'll have to play many games with no startup sequence (may turn out to be more annoying than swapping disks). Some won't work. And, above all, whdload will, it seems, interrupt the game more frequently for disk accesses (I remember playing superfrog/projectX on a 2 MB A600, loadings were unbearable : I tried them under UAE "7.14 Mhz" with 2+1 MB ram : they do load very fast with no interruption. But some games, like waxworks, still interrupt the game frequently which is a bit tedious, as you momentarily see a black screen with no sound). Also, with the ram extension, you'll be able to preload 2 disks games. (sadly, not above, 3.5 MB is still not that high :)

Overall, I would say that WHDLOAD with little memory is way more frustrating that using floppy disks ;)

To conclude : forget whdload (and maybe, most games requiring 1 MB of chip, from the WB) with the built-in memory. May still be useful for apps ! (too bad, one or more additional megabytes would have been perfect)

PS : I wonder if games that still untimely interrupt games, even with more ram, but not enough to preload the game (btw you have to edit the tooltypes to remove "preload" otherwise it may crash) are not the ones which contain the games files instead of the disk images. It may "resume" the OS to load every single file, instead of preloading more sectors, maybe.

QS42891PA 0732

i got them lying around here so it would be great to use it for this upgrade

Thats what I found:
Code:
Part: IS62WV51216ALL

Category:
Memory
   -> SRAM
     -> Async. SRAM

Description: 8M 512Kx16

This should work on Minimig as long as the access time is 70ns and below.
I assume your chips do have 55ns access time but maybe only 6 data bits(?), if your reading was right.

Removing R50 and R51 speed up the sd card access ?
